A Day in the Life of Dr. Marsha Gordon

The president of the Business Council of Westchester shares what an average day looks like for her.

President of the Business Council of Westchester (BCW) and the county’s own Energizer Bunny, Dr. Marsha Gordon does more in average day than many people do in a week. Let’s follow along.

3:00 A.M.

Wake up. My mind is buzzing. I can’t help but think of the busy day ahead. But wait! It’s past midnight so I get in my daily Wordle. I hope for an answer in 3 to 4 tries before falling back asleep.

My alarm goes off and I start the day by scanning online news. The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal are my big ones, plus curated newsletters focusing on business, politics, and New York news, such as the Council of Industries of New York Manufacturing.

7:15 AM

I meet my BCW Board Member and friend, Wiley Harrison, at Kensico Dam for a 1 hour, 3.2 mile walk. His positivity kickstarts my day. We make every effort to go all the way to the top of the dam but some days we stick with the loops.

8:15-10:30 A.M.

A quick outfit change in the Kensico ladies’ room and on to the BCW Board Meeting led by Jamie Schutzer, our Chair. We have over 50 members in attendance. The agenda focuses on presentations by the leaders of the BCW Clean Energy Action Coalition, chaired by Ron Kamen, Dan Singer, and Mike Murphy. Renewable energy sources and clean energy adoption are top of mind.

10:30-11:30 A.M.

I block out time to visit my 97-year-old dad, who lives at Atria Senior Living in Rye Brook.

12:00 P.M.

Lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, Sam’s of Gedney Way, in White Plains. I meet up with a former Board member, Immediate Past Chairman Heidi Davidson, to discuss upcoming leadership nominations. I order the butternut squash soup and the specialty salad, especially if it has goat cheese.

1:30-2:00 P.M.

Back to the office to head into the BCW Podcast Studio. My co-host Amanda DePalma and I record an upcoming “What’s Trending” episode, sponsored by Thompson and Bender. We promote the Westchester Wine and Food Festival, a week-long extravaganza full of events that we love. Grand Tasting Village is my favorite.

There are a number of rewarding philanthropic opportunities and organizations throughout Westchester County.

2:00-3:00 P.M.

On to the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) meeting. I co-chair this group and we will be reviewing applications for New York State funding for economic development, infrastructure, and planning prior to the full council meeting later this month.

3:00-4:30 P.M.

I connect with Linda Tyler, Vice President of Membership & Programs, to meet some of the latest BCW members. This is one of my favorite aspects of what I do. It’s a great way to create new strategic alliances and learn about their goals and contributions to the community.

4:30-6:00 P.M.

My next meeting is with the newest group of the BCW’s Rising Stars: 40 Under 40, chaired by Heidi Winslow. Engaging with the incredible young professionals who will lead our county into the future is a highlight of my year.

6:00-6:15 P.M.

A quick FaceTime with my grandchildren Mollie and Wayne and their mama to plan for our weekend visit. I’m so excited to see them.

6:15-7:00 P.M.

Dinner with my hubby. His signature dish is chicken, which I love, and asparagus because we try to be healthy.

7:30-9:30 P.M.

Westchester Community Orchestra rehearsal. I am in the second violin section and this repertoire includes Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. Getting ready for a stellar performance!

10:30 P.M.

Finally bedtime, but not before dealing with some e-mails and texts, which I know I shouldn’t do before going to sleep. For balance I take a peek at social media because all those silly reels make me laugh.
