One Port Chester Building’s Transformation from Life Savers Candy Company Headquarters to Condominiums

Life Savers may have been created in Garrettsville, Ohio, but the iconic circular candies, created a century ago this year, have deeper roots in Westchester. In 1920, seven years after acquiring the rights to the candy for $2,900, Edward John Noble moved the headquarters of the Life Savers Candy Company to Port Chester. The manufacturing plant was housed in a green-and-white building on Main Street adorned with replicas of giant Life Savers, and, at its peak, employed 650—making it one of the city’s most important businesses. The plant closed in 1985, after hard candy sales sharply dropped. The building, now a designated landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places, morphed into condominiums.
