The Remington Boys & Girls Club Gets a Modern Makeover in New Rochelle

Designed by GF55 Architects, The Remington Boys & Girls Clubhouse features an innovative facility to serve over 3,500 children and teens.

As part of New Rochelle’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, the new, two-story Remington Boys & Girls Clubhouse replaces the former Boys & Girls facility with a playful yet functional design that was completed in 2024. GF55 Architects, a national firm with offices in New York City and Miami, designed the clubhouse with a modern and innovative approach. The Remington Clubhouse is part of The Renaissance at Lincoln Park development, a $96 million affordable housing development in New Rochelle for mixed-income apartments, an expanded Boys & Girls Club facility, a senior housing building, and a new parking garage. It’s also the first youth support facility to be built in New Rochelle in over 40 years. The clubhouse is conveniently situated around Lincoln Park with easy access to transportation and provides youth support for children and teens outside of school.

A Modern and Resilient Design

The redesign project won a 2024 AIA Design Award from AIA Westchester and Hudson Valley. Keeping the modern aesthetic in mind, GF55 Architects designed Remington in a unique structural shape with fresh graphics to make the building identifiable and lively. The building materials for the structural development include a multi-toned fiber cement board, bright blue corrugated metal panels, and double height glazing. Elevated four feet above grade, the Clubhouse includes passive rainwater mitigation strategies for flood resistance. The roof includes 3,800 square feet of high-efficiency solar panels producing 74KW of power.

“As architects, one of our guidelines is simple materials in creative ways. It doesn’t have to be deluxe to make it innovative. The clubhouse looks industrial and not residential,” says executive partner of GF55 Architects David E. Gross AIA. “You can see the construction elements – the exposed metal ceiling, the corrugated metal walls, the steel trusses, and the open steel treads. The design uses these elements of construction to create a decorative effect.”

A Look Inside the Facility

The Clubhouse contains a light-filled lobby café to the left of the entrance as well as a large window view of basketball courts with a fully equipped gym. To the right of the lobby near the orange steel stairs are the game lounge, music and podcast studios, fine art studios, teen lounges, administrator offices, and multi-purpose social areas.

The STEM classrooms provide a view of Lincoln Park in New Rochelle, which has newly added pedestrian pathways. Additionally, the community kitchen supports events and social gatherings at the clubhouse.

“We are motivated to design something special because the mission of the project was so meaningful. Many of the kids said they’d never had anything new. New is fresh, new is yours. It’s not a quick fix or a hand-me-down, and it demonstrates to the children that anything is possible,” shares Gross.

Designed and constructed in accordance with Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) guidelines to ensure quality, function, and durability, The Remington Clubhouse is a meticulously planned development that helps reshape New Rochelle as a model for future urban developments.
