Turning Social Media Into a Career: Where to Study in Westchester County

For many people, social media starts as entertainment. But for a growing number of students, it’s becoming a profession.

As companies increasingly rely on online platforms to connect with audiences, colleges are building programs designed to turn digital fluency into career-ready skills.

In Westchester County, several institutions now offer specialized programs that teach students how to plan campaigns, analyze audiences, and build brands across social platforms.

Whether you’re a recent high school graduate, a career changer, or a working professional looking to expand your skill set, these programs provide structured pathways into the fast-growing world of social media and digital marketing.

SUNY Westchester Community College: A Fast-Track Certificate Option

Not every student wants or needs a four-year or graduate degree to break into social media.

At SUNY Westchester Community College in Valhalla, the social media specialist certificate offers a shorter, workforce-focused program designed for entrepreneurs, small business owners, career changers, and marketing professionals who want practical skills without committing to a full degree.

“Social media today isn’t just about posting content, it’s about strategy,” says Dr. Sherry Mayo, director of the Center for the Digital Arts. “We developed the social media specialist certificate to help students understand how to optimize major platforms and use them intentionally to build and communicate a brand.”

The program includes seven core courses and one required elective. Required courses include social media networks, content fundamentals, social media profile optimization, and social media strategies and procedures. Students also explore topics such as marketing campaigns, analytics, and crisis management.

Throughout the program, students build a portfolio that mirrors the work social media professionals perform in the field, including content plans, marketing campaigns, and performance reports.

Storage Solved: California Closets

Challenge: I’m determined to organize my master bedroom walk-in closet by spring. How can I make the best use of my time to ensure I reach my goal?

“It’s a very comprehensive program for students to tackle,” says Becky Livingston, an adjunct professor at the Center for the Digital Arts who teaches the program. “I don’t make it easy, but I do make it fun.”

Livingston says students learn how to evaluate social media platforms, develop brand voices, create advertising campaigns, and measure performance through analytics. They also develop crisis management strategies for brands and learn how artificial intelligence tools are shaping modern social media work.

The certificate includes seven courses and one elective, and students gain access to Hootsuite’s social media certificate exam after completing the program. Tuition for the entire certificate is $1,416, though students can also enroll one course at a time.

Because it’s a certificate program, the timeline is shorter and more flexible, making it appealing for adults balancing work, family responsibilities, or entrepreneurial ventures.

Pace University: Social Media at the Graduate Level

For students looking to deepen their expertise, Pace University offers a specialized graduate program focused entirely on social media and marketing.

The Master of Science in social media and mobile marketing, offered through the Lubin School of Business, prepares students for careers such as social media manager, digital marketing specialist, paid social media marketing manager, chief marketing officer, and community manager.

According to Randi Priluck, director of the program and senior associate dean of undergraduate studies at Pace, the curriculum is constantly evolving to keep pace with the digital marketing industry.

“Our program is very cutting edge,” Priluck says. “We incorporate new technologies every semester.”

Students in the program use a range of emerging tools and platforms. They analyze MRI Simmons consumer data using Claude AI, build marketing apps with Google AI Studio, and create digital content using tools such as Sora and Canva.

The program teaches students how to research, plan, implement, and evaluate marketing campaigns across mobile and social platforms. The in-person degree requires 30 to 36 credits and can be completed in about 1.5 to 2 years, with both full-time and part-time options available.

Pace has also invested heavily in faculty training to ensure instructors remain up to date with industry developments. Faculty members complete coursework on artificial intelligence in the workplace and participate in seminars focused on the evolving role of AI in business and marketing education.

Located just outside New York City, the university also offers students access to networking opportunities with major companies and guest speakers from the marketing industry. Graduates have gone on to work at organizations including Sony, Viacom, NBCUniversal, Yelp, and more.

The College of Westchester: A Digital Media Certificate Path

Students seeking a structured but shorter path into digital media can also pursue a certificate program at The College of Westchester in White Plains.

The college offers a 21- to 23-month digital media specialist certificate designed to prepare students for careers in graphic design, web design, social media marketing, animation, and video production.

The 48-credit program combines creative development with technical training and emphasizes hands-on learning with industry-standard tools and software, the college says. Students build professional portfolios while developing skills in content creation, branding, and digital storytelling.

Courses include visual storytelling, introduction to digital and social media marketing, digital design and graphics, social media platforms and content strategy, social media communications, and principles of marketing.

The curriculum also includes coursework in artificial intelligence, public speaking, and English composition, the college says.

Electives allow students to customize their coursework while building experience with marketing campaigns and multimedia storytelling.

Is Social Media Marketing the Right Fit?

For students who enjoy creativity, storytelling, and analyzing trends, social media can offer a dynamic and evolving career path.

Unlike traditional marketing roles, social media requires professionals to adapt quickly as algorithms change, platforms evolve, and consumer behavior shifts. That constant change is one reason educational programs have expanded in recent years to help students understand not just how to post content, but how to develop strategies that deliver measurable results, professors and program directors say.

In Westchester County, aspiring social media professionals have several pathways to get started. From short-term certificates to graduate degrees, local programs aim to give students the skills needed to build a career in the fast-moving digital world.
